Job Purpose ; Amnesty International is Looking for an Advocacy and Policy Advisor to Hire
Working as part of the Amnesty Tech’s Disrupting Surveillance Team, the Policy and Advocacy Advisor will coordinate, develop, implement and lead advocacy activities, working closely with researchers, campaigners and technologists. The postholder will join at a time of expansion for the Disrupting Surveillance Team as it grows to face the increased challenges presented by surveillance technologies to the work of human rights defenders around the world. This is an exciting time to be joining a growing team that has a track record of high impact research and campaigning.
NB: The location for this post is London but we will consider options to base candidates in other locations where there is an Amnesty International Secretariat office, or can offer relocation and work permit support.
Main Responsibilities ; Amnesty International is Looking for an Advocacy and Policy Advisor to Hire
- Develop, cultivate and leverage productive relationships with decision makers, legislators, CSOs, policy experts and researchers to deliver on the DST’s advocacy goals; build effective coalition efforts and campaigns to advocate for urgently need for action against unlawful surveillance;
- Maintain a log of stakeholder relationships, identify opportunities for strategic relationship building within relevant bodies around the world, civil society groups, academic institutions and IGOS;
- Work closely with the Amnesty colleagues in working on advocacy to identify opportunities for collaboration in support of the DST’s advocacy goals;
- Develop the DST’s advocacy strategy on unlawful surveillance of civil society; facilitate brainstorming and strategic planning sessions; align the strategy with wider advocacy goals at Amnesty International and Amnesty Tech;
- Spearhead Amnesty Tech’s advocacy activities related to targeted surveillance and unlawful surveillance, arrange meetings with policymakers and elected officials where appropriate;
- Produce high quality advocacy outputs including research analyses, policy briefs, responses to government consultations, submissions and contribute to communications materials.
Skills and Experience
- Sufficient experience in advocacy or advocacy related work, preferably in the tech and human rights field.
- Ability and self-driven interest to keep up to date with emerging surveillance technology trends.
- Excellent written and verbal English is essential; in addition, the ability to work to a high professional level in another widely used language will be an advantage.
- Experience in campaigning will be an additional advantage.
- Expertise and professional experience in human rights law is desirable, such as through legal drafting and analytic skills in the application of international human rights law.
