Job Purpose and Organizational Context

UNDP is the UN’s global development agency supporting member states in their efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. UNDP works in nearly 170 countries and territories, helping to achieve the eradication of poverty and the reduction of inequalities and exclusion. The UNDP Sub-Regional Hub for West and Central Africa (UNDP WACA) covers 24 countries, ranging from high and middle-income economies to least developed countries and countries in crisis and post-crisis situations. 

The UNDP WACA hub is implementing a regional programme “ The Governance Promise to Stabilise, Sustain and Transform The Sahel”. One of key approaches adopted  to promote governance is to ensure enhanced capacities in economic governance enabling states to secure capacities and ressources needed to fast track the domestication of SDGs. Under the UNDP governance and peacebuilding framework 2022-2025, UNDP considers economic governance as a strategic pillar.

While a number of countries have adopted the economic governance related policies and strategies or are in the process of doing so, challenges in fully implementing the related reforms and empowering institutions to deliver. Moreover, institutions and states are still challenged to develop strategic partnership which will enable them to deliver on their development ambitions. Similarly, to achieve its mandate, the Sub-Regional Office relies on strategic partnerships, both technical and financial while promoting countries’ efforts to deliver on SDG17- Partnership for the goals.

In view of the importance of economic governance and partnership, UNDP would like to acquire dedicated capacity which will enable dedicated focus and delivery in these areas. 

In line with the above, the UNDP WACA hub is recruiting a economic governance and partnership officer. He/She will be working under the supervision of the Governance and Peacebuilding Advisor and in close collaboration relevant the UNDP WACA advisors, specialists, analysts, the governance and peace building team.

Duties and Responsibilities


The Officer is expected to:

  1. Contribute to the implementation of the regional governance programme with particular focus on the economic governance;
  2. Develop initiatives and projects aiming at promoting economic governance and future smart service delivery in the WACA region
  3. Facilitate partnership building and coordination for UNDP WACA and develop resource mobilization tools in line with the priorities of the UNDP WACA hub
  4. Facilitate the reporting, monitoring and evaluation of the regional programme on governance as well as all the UNDP WACA donor funded projects,
  5. Provide technical support in the coordination of the UNISS Governance pillar 
  6. Contribute to the alignment of the regional governance programme to corporate and regional planning planning and reporting tools primarily the governance and peacebuilding framework and United Nations Integrated Strategy for the Sahel (UNISS) 
  7. Contribute to the development of knowledge and communication products. 

Institutional Arrangement

The economic governance and partnership officer will be based in the UNDP WACA Governance and Peacebuilding Team and work under the supervision of the Governance and Peacebuilding Advisor. and in close collaboration relevant the UNDP WACA Advisors, Specialists, Analysts, the Governance and Peace building Team.

   Minimum Qualifications of the Successful IPSA

Min. Education requirementsAdvanced university degree (Master or equivalent) in development studies, law, social studies, political studies, human rights and diplomacy, business administration is required.Up to 2 years (with master’s degree) or 2 years (with bachelor’s degree) of relevant experience at the national or international level in public relations, advocacy, or communication A first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience will be given due consideration in lieu of the advanced university degree. 
Min. years of relevant work experience Up to two years (with master’s degree) or 2 years (with bachelor’s degree) of relevant of experience in development work and in project management is required with Master’s degree; Previous experience working on Governance and Peacebuiling; Proven experience in working with regional and international organizations; Prior experience in partnership building and management; Knowledge of the UN/DP strategic frameworks such as the SDGs, the UNDP strategic Plan and the Africa offer;Excellent drafting and communication skills.
Required  skills Technical Knowledge: Knowledge of regional and global development frameworks mainly SDGs and Agenda 2063; Knowledge of the UN programming principles- Leave no one behind (gender equality and human rights) resilience and sustainability;Basic knowledge of result based management principlesAbility to conduct risk analysis and develop mitigation strategies

Skills:  Proficiency in conducting research and analysis Proficiency and experience in MS Office applications  Excellent oral, written and presentation skills. 

Others:  Coordination experience working with governments, development partners, and international organizations; 
Effective organizational and problem-solving skills and ability to manage a large volume of work in an efficient and timely manner; 
Ability to establish priorities and to plan, coordinate and monitor (own) work; 
Ability to work under pressure, with conflicting deadlines, and to handle multiple concurrent projects/activities;

Desired skills in addition to the competencies covered in the Competencies sectionDemonstrated experience and good knowledge of UN/UNDP and other development organizations is highly desirable.
Required Language(s) Proficiency in English. Knowledge of French is an added value.
