UNICEF Internship in Data Visualization
The Division is responsible for driving, shaping and guiding UNICEF’s evidence-informed analysis, strategic planning, programme monitoring and organizational performance management. As such, DAPM enables the organization to deliver on results in a more coherent manner, based on agile and contextualized programming process, and on data, evidence, and analysis, as well as the application of human-rights based and results-based management approaches.
Within DAPM, the Data & Analytics Team (DAT) is the global go-to for data on children. It leads the collection, validation, analysis, use and communication of the most statistically sound, internationally comparable data on the situation of children and women around the world. For this purpose, both traditional and innovative data and analysis – including administrative and household survey data as well as geospatial analysis, big data and machine learning – are used.
DAT provides leadership, strategic and normative guidance and technical support to generate data and evidence on children. The team works together with other teams within UNICEF as well as partner organizations, to support statistical systems strengthening at the country level. DAT is also fostering a data-driven transformation in how UNICEF works internally and together with partners that includes positioning UNICEF as a leader on data for children, protecting children through governance of data and building an organization-wide culture of data.
How can you make a difference?
We are looking for a driven and data savvy intern to support this work as a member of two teams: the data communication team and the frontier data team. In this execution-oriented role and under the supervision of the Communication Specialist and the Information Comm. Technology Specialist, the consultant will collaborate closely with other units in the Global Data Team to create compelling data visualizations and implement data science focused projects.
Objectives of the Internship
To gain exposure and knowledge of UNICEF’s organizational and working environment, in particular in the following areas:
- UNICEF’s thematic work related to Data and Analytics
- Data communication work (digital production, dissemination)
- Visualizing data for programming and advocacy using the latest data viz libraries and UNICEF’s data warehouse.
- Data warehousing of UNICEF’s indicator data, including becoming fluent in the SDMX standard, UNICEF’s reference data codes lists and structures, and in maintaining and enhancing Python-based ETL data pipelines
- Updating and enhancing UNICEF’s DDI-compliant data catalog using Python metadata extraction scripts
Specific Activities for the UNICEF Internship in Data Visualization
Responsibilities include:
- Create data visualizations including interactive charts, maps and dashboards from a variety of data sources, including CSV and Excel files, but also APIs.
- Write, edit, design and produce secondary outreach materials such as emails, blog posts, social media assets and infographics using CRM platforms.
- Produce internal communications assets such as ICON stories, Global Broadcast Messages and Yammer posts. Ensure cohesion between public and internal-facing websites.
- Provide support to the Data Communication team with other communication activities as needed.
- Perform ETL operations on UNICEF’s Data Bricks analytics environment; perform data anlysis and visualization in Python
- Update data and reference data structures on UNICEF’s indicator data warehouse
- Add new data sources to UNICEF’s data catalogue
Expected Academic and Professional Outputs
- Enhanced skills in creating visual data products for advocacy and programming
- Increased knowledge of UNICEF’s role as the custodian of data for children
- Familiarity with the objectives, structure, and activities of UNICEF’s Global Data Team
- Attendance of internal UNICEF seminars, lectures and workshops at UNICEF may provide an opportunity to meet leading experts and reflect upon issues, trends and strategies shaping child related policies and practices.
Duration
This will be a full-time internship, the duration of the internship will be for 6 months. Expected starting date is September/ October 2023.
Salary/Payment:
In accordance with UNICEF’s guidelines, interns will be paid a stipend of up to US $1,700 per month, depending on the intern’s location. There is no expectancy of employment at the end of the internship. UNICEF is not responsible for obtaining any necessary visas.
To qualify as an advocate for every child you will…
- Be enrolled in a graduate degree program (or up to one year post graduation) relevant in business administration, data, communication or similar. Experience in digital graphic design using relevant data visualization software especially Tableau and the ability to create designs for digital media purposes.
- Have experience/ or strong understanding on reporting on qualitative and quantitative analytics
- Have excellent oral and written communication skills, initiative, flexibility and willingness to learn.
- Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records.
- Additional consideration will be given to any past professional experience in the area of data visualization.
- Proficiency in English.
