Digital
The Digital Freedom Fund works to advance digital rights through strategic litigation in Europe. We do this through grants that support the legal, advocacy, research, and other costs involved in litigation as well as through facilitating skill development and networking of organisations working on digital rights issues, among others. DFF co-drives a process towards decolonising the digital rights field, which informs all our work. The initiative focuses on the need to tackle how uneven power dynamics, exclusion, and systems of oppression play out in the current digital rights field, to increase our capacity to foster change for all.

Increase your streams of income become a Development Officer (Part-time, remote) at the Digital Freedom Fund

Digital
We are looking for a Development Officer (part-time) who can help drive our fundraising to a new level. We are looking for a proven fundraising specialist and strategic thinker who will work collaboratively with our full team. The Development Officer will work under the supervision of the Director.
As Development Officer, your focus will be to help DFF increase its annual budget (currently at just above EUR 2.5 million) by expanding its base of foundation, individual and government donors. DFF has a strong track record in foundation fundraising – current donors include Luminate, Open Society Foundations, Adessium Foundation, Ford Foundation, Bosch Stiftung, Mercator Stiftung, Limelight Foundation, Fondation Nicolas Puech, and others. We also receive funding from the European Commission.
We would like to further diversify that group of funders, but we also want this position to help us explore new and transformative approaches to fundraising, so a willingness to innovate and experiment is important. Goals will be set early in the tenure of the Development Officer looking at the organization’s current needs and opportunities, as well as the strengths and time availability of the chosen candidate, to help the jobholder prioritise effectively. The Development Officer should have systems in place to benchmark and track progress.
DFF fundraises under the guidance of its Ethical Funding Policy, which outlines the type of funding we accept, and the types of activities donations and other funding are used for. Our Ethical Funding Policy seeks to ensure that we can properly manage our priorities and projects with appropriate independence from our funders. A summary of the DFF Ethical Funding Policy can be accessed here.
DFF’s team is based in various cities in Europe, with the majority based in Germany, where the Development Officer will preferably be based (other locations in Europe can be considered).
Role description
The Development Officer’s activities will include the following main tasks:
- Conduct research to identify new sources of institutional funding on an ongoing basis for our donor pipeline, and stay aware of trends and changes in human rights funding and key donors in the field;
- Help in developing new initiatives to fund our two main work programmes: grantmaking and community strengthening and support (which includes the decolonising project);
- Support management in further developing the organisation’s fundraising strategy (incl. on alternative fundraising and transformative approaches to funding); organisational development policy; and strengthening fundraising systems (i.e. grants management, internal learning);
- Develop proposals and reports to funders in collaboration with the Director and relevant team members;
- Support the development of materials used for fundraising, including the annual donor reports and any other relevant communications, and ensure these reach the right people;
- Assist with other relevant tasks as required.
Candidate profile : Digital
The successful candidate will have:
- Some fundraising experience for a human rights or racial & social justice organisation;
- Demonstrable entrepreneurial spirit and ability to identify and capitalise on opportunities; bringing own network of relevant contacts at philanthropic institutions or similar is desirable;
- Able to use own initiative and work independently within agreed frameworks; motivated by achieving results and completing tasks and being accountable;
- Strong organisational and prioritisation, and time-management skills, including attention to detail, enabling efficient and effective work; be willing to work remotely and self-support in terms of various administrative matters;
- Appreciation of the values and mission of the organisation, be excited to work on digital rights issues using an intersectional lens, and have a proven ability to represent the organisation to donors and prospects;
- Ability to maintain high standards of ethics, integrity, and professionalism, and to handle sensitive and proprietary financial information;
The successful candidate will also have:
- Proven ability to communicate clearly and succinctly in English;
- Capacity to tell our story in a compelling manner that brings others on board to support the mission of the organisation, including the ability to support the team in translating its work into core messages;
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to maintain collaborative relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and whose mother tongue is not English;
- Be motivated in working towards an anti-oppressive workplace; critically reflect on their own work and implement feedback as a way to constantly evolve and improve;
- Have basic proficiency with common office software and utilities such as cloud servers, password managers, project management software and MS Office;
- Have a valid work permission in an EU country; occasional international travel can be required.
