The Commonwealth an excellent opportunity for a Legal Adviser in London (Legislative Support and Law Reform) to join our Governance and Peace Directorate. Reporting to the Head of Rule of Law Section (RoL), the post-holder will provide legal and policy advisory services to Commonwealth member countries. The post-holder will be responsible for Providing leadership of the legislative support and law reform programme of RoL Section and delivering legal and policy advice and facilitating research and the development of legal policy either individually or as part of the RoL team.

Job Context
The Commonwealth Secretariat is the principal intergovernmental body of the Commonwealth, responsible for advancing and achieving the shared goals of the association’s 56 member countries in advancing democracy, development and respect for diversity. The Rule of Law Section (RoL Section) is one of several departments in the Governance and Peace Directorate (GPD) of the Commonwealth Secretariat. The GPD is responsible for the promotion of democracy, human rights, the rule of law, and good governance within the Commonwealth.
In addition to providing policy and legal advice as well as technical assistance, the RoL Section facilitates consensus-building and multilateral cooperation on a wide range of rule of law matters of concern to Commonwealth member countries, including on efforts to realize Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 and the building of effective rule of law and justice frameworks, (i.e., laws, institutions, policies, and practices), and addressing the problem of increasing cybercrime.
Job Summary for the Legal Advisor in London Position
Reporting to the Head of Rule of Law, the post-holder provides legal and policy advisory services to Commonwealth member countries. The post-holder will be responsible for:
• Providing leadership of the legislative support and law reform programme of RoL Section;
• Taking direct responsibility for the results-based management of projects within their area of expertise and responsibility;
• Delivering legal and policy advice and facilitating research and the development of legal policy either individually or as part of the RoL team.
To be considered, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A degree in law from a Commonwealth jurisdiction
- A minimum of ten years’ all-round experience in the practice of law with clear evidence of experience at a senior level in:
- Constitutional law.
- Administrative law.
- Legislative drafting and/or management of programmes in legislative support and law reform.
- Experience in project design and management will be an advantage.
- To join us, you must be a citizen of a Commonwealth country.
