The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) seeks a highly skilled and motivated Communications Strategy Specialist for the Global Framework on Chemicals Secretariat, based in Geneva, Switzerland. The position is located within the UNEP Industry and Economy Division, specifically in the Chemicals and Health Branch.

About UNEP

UNEP leads global efforts in addressing environmental challenges, fostering sustainability, and promoting the protection of the planet. It coordinates environmental policies at the global and regional levels, influencing governmental and international decision-making.

The Global Framework on Chemicals, adopted in September 2023, aims to address chemicals management and pollution control through sustainable practices. UNEP is expanding its efforts to implement this framework and is looking for a Communications Strategy Specialist to drive its communication initiatives.

Position Overview

The incumbent will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive communications strategy for the Global Framework on Chemicals. The role includes content creation, media outreach, digital presence revamp, stakeholder engagement, and data-driven reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop Communications Strategy: Draft content, create communication products, and strategize media outreach to highlight priority issues on chemicals management and pollution action. Ensure global discourse is influenced by effective communications.
  • Content Production & Media Outreach: Produce press releases, feature articles, speeches, and digital media content. Manage media relations and assess the impact of communication efforts.
  • Digital Presence: Lead the redesign of the Global Chemicals Framework‘s online platform in collaboration with UNEP’s Communications Division. Ensure it aligns with UNEP’s digital strategy and is user-friendly.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Develop strategies to ensure effective communication with stakeholders, and sustain professional relationships to promote the framework’s implementation.
  • Data Analysis: Collect and analyze data trends, providing insights through charts and reports to support decision-making and communications planning.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Master’s degree (or equivalent) in communications, journalism, public relations, marketing, or a related field. A Bachelor’s degree plus two additional years of relevant experience is also acceptable. Completion of data analytics or business analytics programs is desirable.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum 5 years of experience in strategic communications, public relations, or related fields.
    • Proven expertise in developing and implementing global communication strategies.
    • Experience in content production for international organizations and digital communication.
    • 2+ years of experience in data analytics is a plus.
  • Languages: Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of French or another UN language is an asset.

  • Creativity: Ability to think outside the box, propose innovative solutions, and introduce new ideas for program improvement.
