Job Description:
The World Health Organization (WHO) is seeking a Legal Officer to provide independent, authoritative, and practical legal advice, ensuring the Organization’s operations align with its global public health mission. As a Legal Officer, you will protect WHO’s resources, reputation, and integrity by offering legal counsel during the planning and implementation of WHO’s activities. You will be involved in high-level legal decision-making across various intergovernmental bodies, member states, and international organizations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide legal advice to WHO’s governing bodies, including the World Health Assembly, Executive Board, and various expert committees.
- Assist with international legal instruments between WHO and member states, ensuring the Organization’s status under international law is maintained.
- Advise on procedural and substantive legal questions during the operation of WHO’s activities.
- Draft legal documents and ensure compliance with international law and WHO policies.
- Represent WHO externally in legal forums and provide legal guidance for intergovernmental meetings.
Qualifications:
- Education: University degree in law. A master’s degree or PhD in international law is desirable.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of legal experience, including knowledge of international law and experience advising international organizations.
- Skills: Strong understanding of public international law. Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex legal matters to non-lawyers.
Languages:
- Essential: Expert knowledge of English.
- Desirable: Knowledge of French or other UN languages.
Remuneration:
- Base Salary: USD 64,121 annually (subject to deductions).
- Post Adjustment: USD 5,092 per month (reflecting the cost of living in Geneva).
- Benefits: 30 days of annual leave, allowances for dependent family members, education grant for dependent children, home leave.
